Joburg pools to reopen in October as City prioritises safety

The City of Johannesburg has postponed the opening of its public swimming pools from 1 September to 1 October 2026, as it works to ensure that municipal facilities are safe and ready for the summer season. Johannesburg has more than 50 municipal swimming pools across its regions, providing residents with affordable recreational spaces and opportunities to stay active during the warmer months.

The City will adopt a phased reopening, with 36 pools scheduled to open in October. The approach takes into account the varying condition, maintenance requirements and operational readiness of facilities across the City.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Thapelo Amad said the postponement was necessary to ensure that facilities meet the required health, safety and operational standards.

“The City sincerely apologises for the delay and any inconvenience caused to regular pool users and communities. This extension will allow us to address outstanding compliance and maintenance requirements and ensure that our pools provide a safe environment for everyone,” said MMC Amad.

The City is also considering extending the 2026/27 swimming season to April 2027, weather permitting and subject to operational requirements. This would give residents additional opportunities to use municipal pools and help offset the shortened season.

“Municipal swimming pools play an important role in providing affordable recreation and safe spaces for children, young people and communities. We thank residents for their patience as we prepare these facilities for a safe and enjoyable summer season,” said MMC Amad.
