Once known as one of Johannesburg’s most respected semi-suburbs, Lenasia South is now battling a different reputation. Rising crime and drug abuse have eroded its value, pushing residents to flee daily and forcing neighborhoods to erect boom gates and private security at every entrance. Yet even those barriers could not keep alleged gang leaders out.
On Tuesday afternoon, 18 August 2026, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s Tactical Response Unit arrested a high-profile suspect in Lenasia South Extension 4 believed to be connected to a weekend shooting in Westbury that left four people dead.
According to JMPD, officers were conducting high-visibility patrols when they received intelligence linking the suspect to the Westbury killings. Acting on the tip, the Tactical Response Unit moved to a property in Extension 4.
There, police say they found the man in possession of an illegal revolver with its serial number filed off. During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly directed officers to a second address on the same street.
At that location, authorities seized a submachine gun, commonly described as a “Tommy Gun,” along with live ammunition. The suspect was taken into custody and detained at Lenasia South SAPS. He faces charges for possession of unlicensed firearms and prohibited weapons. Investigations into his alleged role in the Westbury shootings remain ongoing.
The arrest underscores how gang violence is spilling beyond traditional hotspots. For Lenasia South residents, the news is another blow to an area already struggling to hold onto its identity.
“High-level security, boom gates, private patrols — we’ve done everything,” said one resident who asked not to be named. “But the kingpins still find their way in.” JMPD commended the Tactical Response Unit for what it called “vigilance, swift execution, and composure under pressure,” noting the operation removed dangerous weapons from circulation and netted a key suspect.
The department also thanked Tracksecure Security Company for its assistance, calling the collaboration between public police and private security critical to restoring order.
“The JMPD remains committed to dismantling gang networks and ensuring the safety of all Johannesburg communities,” a spokesperson said.
Police are urging the public to report suspicious activity and illegal firearms to law enforcement. As the investigation continues, Lenasia South remains a suburb fighting to reclaim its name — one arrest at a time.
