A new chapter of hope and sustainability was opened at New Generation Combined School in Phumla Mqashi, Lenasia South, when a newly installed borehole was officially launched. The initiative, led by the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) in Region G, brought together City officials, donors and learners in a celebration of service and collaboration. The event was also attended by officials from the Office of the MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS).
The borehole, sponsored by Salaamedia and Frimax, is expected to provide a reliable and sustainable water source for learners and educators, easing pressure on the school and supporting its daily operations. The project forms part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure and create a more conducive learning environment for children in the area.
The school also received a donation of paint from Olympic Paints to give classrooms and other school facilities a newer, brighter coat. Volunteers had already painted most of the school before learners arrived, giving the premises a fresh and welcoming appearance.
Officials viewed the newly commissioned borehole and water storage tank, as well as the school’s vegetable garden, which promotes sustainability and supports food security initiatives.
In the true spirit of Mandela Day, City officials dedicated their 67 minutes of service by helping to paint the school kitchen. Brushes in hand, officials worked alongside volunteers and completed the final touches, demonstrating that public service extends beyond offices and into communities where it can make a tangible difference.
The City expressed its appreciation to Frimax, Salaamedia and Olympic Paints for their generous support, as well as to all those who contributed to the success of the initiative.
The event not only celebrated Mandela’s legacy of selfless service but also showed how partnerships can create lasting change. For the learners of New Generation Combined School, the new borehole represents more than infrastructure, it is a symbol of investment in their future.
