As South Africa commemorates 50 years since the Soweto Uprising and 30 years of constitutional democracy, Soweto Pride 2026 invites communities to reflect on Heritage Month through the values of belonging, equality and human dignity. This year’s theme, “iSango leNkululeko – Our Heritage”, encourages South Africans to consider heritage not only as a connection to the past, but also as a commitment to building a society in which everyone feels respected, protected and included.
Jade Jamilla Madingwane, Executive Director of the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW), says the spirit of ubuntu is central to this vision.
“Ubuntu calls us to recognise each other’s humanity, especially when we are different. Heritage is not only about where we come from, but about the kind of society we are choosing to build together.”
Founded by FEW in 2004, Soweto Pride was established to create a safe space for LBQ women and the LGBTQIA+ community in response to violence and exclusion. What began as a small march has grown into a significant Pride event, promoting visibility, advocacy and the celebration of diverse cultures.
e Soweto Pride March will take place on 25 September 2026 on Vilakazi Street in Orlando West. It will bring participants together to promote safer communities, social cohesion and equal rights, while honouring those who have lost their lives to hate crimes.
On 26 September 2026, the Queer Joy Celebration will be held at Kwa Lichaba, also in Orlando West. The event will offer LGBTQIA+ people and their allies an opportunity to celebrate diversity and honour trailblazers such as Simon Nkoli, whose activism contributed to the struggle for equality and constitutional freedoms.
Soweto Pride 2026 extends an invitation to all South Africans, including families, teachers, healthcare workers, faith leaders, community members and allies, to participate in building a society grounded in the constitutional values of dignity, equality and freedom.
This Heritage Month, let us celebrate the right of every person to belong and our shared responsibility to protect that right.
