PRETORIA — In a decisive move to protect public trust, the South African Police Service has suspended nine senior officers linked to a controversial medical supply tender, signaling zero tolerance for procedural breaches within its ranks.
The officers, who served on the Bid Evaluation Committee for the Medicare 24 tender, were placed on precautionary suspension on Thursday, 05 June 2026. SAPS confirmed the action pending the conclusion of disciplinary and forensic investigations into the procurement process.
The Medicare 24 tender has come under internal review after concerns emerged regarding the evaluation and awarding procedures. While SAPS did not disclose specifics, the suspension of nine BEC members indicates the allegations are considered serious enough to warrant immediate administrative action.
“Pending the finalisation of disciplinary and related investigations, the affected members have been placed on suspension,” SAPS stated. The service emphasized that the step is precautionary and does not presume guilt. The national police reiterated its dedication to upholding ethical standards across all operations.
“The SAPS remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency and ethical conduct in all its operations,” the statement read.
Due to ongoing internal processes, SAPS said it will withhold further comment until investigations are complete. The outcome could have significant implications for procurement oversight within the service.
