LENASIA CBD PROTEST CALLS FOR SHUTDOWN OF ILLEGAL SHOPS, COMMUNITY SAFETY

BY LERATO PHOSISI

Lenasia’s CBD saw a coordinated protest march on Friday 19 June 2026, as residents and community structures rallied to demand the closure of illegal shops and the fair, consistent enforcement of the law.

The Lenasia Community Policing Forum confirmed the march, noting that routes shifted throughout the day and could not be pinpointed. Residents were urged to remain alert in the general CBD area.

Lenasia CPF members, law enforcement, and private security were deployed and maintained a visible presence, monitoring the situation to ensure public safety and order.

Organisers said the purpose of the march was threefold: shut down illegal trading operations, ensure laws are applied fairly and consistently, and support safe, thriving communities.

The demonstration proceeded peacefully. Law enforcement agencies kept a close watch, providing supervision and safeguarding residents and businesses throughout the event.

Authorities continue to monitor the area. No incidents were reported. This is a developing story
